Organic farming is an agricultural method of cultivation and breeding that does not use synthetic chemical substances in the various stages of production. The underlying objective is to develop a model that avoids the uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources in order to preserve them and to ensure greater safety for our health. Organic farming has been recognized at Community level in 1991 and is currently governed by Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 of June 28 2007 and the Regulation (EC) No 889/2008 of September 5 2008 which define its principles and general rules and guidelines for application. As per cultivations, organic farming admits only the use of natural substances excluding fertilizers of chemical origin, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. To protect crops one acts proactively, identifying the species more resistant to disease and providing specific agricultural techniques such as:

  • Crop rotation to prevent the settling in of the parasites and to preserve the nutrients of the soil
  • Intercropping that involves parallel cultivation of plants disliked by the parasites of the other
  • Fertilization with natural fertilizers such as manure and other organic composted substances

As for breeding, the animals must be fed with vegetable products obtained from organic production, grown on the same farm or in the district in which it falls. In addition, animals are granted with the conditions appropriate to their specific needs and the opportunity to express their natural behavior. The underlying philosophy of organic farming is a production of high quality and not the maximization of yield. Organic farming is therefore a global system of management of the company which, thanks to a high level of biodiversity, the application of strict criteria regarding the welfare of animals and crops, guarantees the preservation of natural resources and at the same time more safety for humans.
